Question Why is it suggested that I have 2 professions?

Hey everyone, I'm wondering why the game keeps hinting that I need 2 professions. I just wanted to be an Elementalist, but the quest characters keeps pushing me to have a second trade. Why is this?

I think I went to the 2 Elemental trainers and when I was done with their quests, it was like - that's it for us, go see the monk. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way I could just become a more and more powerful Elementalist, and keep leveling up that way.

While the game pretty much REQUIRES you to have a second profession, you are NOT required to put skill point on second professions if you dont want to. Just pick a second job and ignore it as if it didnt exist. Though you might find a use for for it someday. Unlimited respeccing is nice too.

Nope, the game requires that you choose a secondary profession, you don't have to put any skill points in that profession but you still have to choose. I usually choose monk to get the res skills, but you can choose any one of the others available in that campain.

Second professions give you more choices in builds, not so much with nuking eles, but some mes skill do give energy.

i would sugest you chose either mesmer for arcane echo for nuke skills or monk for res

thanks for the help everyone....makes sense more now....I don't like dying so maybe the Monk's res skills would be really nice. Thanks!

The reasoning behind this is for unlocking for pvp.The reason is because there were 6 classes in Prophecies the first chapter.This gave you the opprotunity to choose 3 professions and reserve 1 for pvp only.This would give you the ability(sp) to unlock all skills.

Or you could unlock skills via Balthazar faction and/or having a single character and changing his/her secondary at will and talking to skill trainer...just saying

On-Topic: Secondary professions are required to progress in the game, but not always necessary. Later in the game you will find more use for them.

It is probably a holdover from Prophecies where not having 2 professions ruins skill quests by giving you less rewards if you only had 1 profession.

Just FYI - There is a way to not have a secondary profession for EOTN, Proph, and Factions. It's possible to get ran to all of these campaigns without a secondary profession from Nightfall.

Make sure to do ALL of the profession quests. That will unlock skills for your future heroes.

To add my 2 cents to what's been said, you need to pick a secondary profession to advance in the game, but you don't need to put any attribute points in the secondary nor do you need to have any skills from the secondary, on your skill bar. You can still be just an Elementalist.
Also, later on in the game, you can change your secondary to whatever you like. So you don't need to be concerned that you will be locked into something you don't want later, if you choose now.
Many people, when they are starting a new character, just take Monk as a secondary. This is just so that they can equip a "reusable" monk resurrection skill instead of just a rez signet. And, if you have space in your skill bar, you can throw a few "left over" attribute points into Healing Prayers and equip a Monk healing skill as a self-heal, if desired.

you are required 2 professions in order to progress in the main campaign however your not required to use any of those skills nor are you required to put points into the secondary attribute, you can also change the secondary profession later so your not set forever.

Keep in mind, you are still an elementalist. Just use skills from your secondary to compliment what you do, not replace it. For the most part, by ele never uses a skill from his secondary. When I do, it's usually just one skill.

You do not become a more powerful elementalist by not choosing a secondary prefession,- so you might as well pick one.
It will present you with a wider selection of skills to chose from, so, it's actually a win-win situation even if you chose not to use skill from the secondary profession.

Hey,,,Thanks everyone for the help and tips! Just so you'll know, I'm only playing the trial version, but I'm thinking seriously about buying the full version, based on my gameplay thus far. I come from a strictly first person shooter background, and GW is very relaxing by comparison.

I'm playing PvE now....what can I expect if I switch to PvP? I mean the guys I play Unreal Tournament 2004 with are very skilled and competitive. I'm coming here to play a more relaxed game, I'm wondering if I go PvP what will I gain, and what will it cost me..........like am I going to put on my headset and be super competitive? I've already got that with ut2k4.

So to follow up on my orig. topic, when a trainer offers me to train in another skill....I should just pick the ones I haven't tried and do them all?

There's casual PvP, like Random Arena, and more hardcore Heroes Ascent. There's Guild versus Guild, there's Alliance Battles if you have Factions, as well as Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry. There's Team Arena and Heroes Battle if you have Nightfall.

There was no priest of Balthazar in beta and when the game first came out that was about 6+ months later.You had to when the game first came out to unlock skill through pve play not pvp.There were no unlocks packs.This is the reason you had 1 pvp char and 3 pve chars to unlock all skills.This is how it was suppose to work untill a certian forum put up a fight about it.

You unlocked all weapon mods and runes this way as well as there was no rune trader in beginning.That is why there were/are id kits.

Pve is a good place to learn the mechanics of the game, and to learn how to efficiently play your profession. I would suggest playing through pve a bit before you enter into competitive pvp. In pvp, the rewards are often dependent on player skill level, so if you start out in this forum, you may quickly be frustrated by a lack of progress. Also you have teammates in pvp usually, so it's nice if you have put some effort into learning how to play beforehand.

That said, don't be discouraged from pvp when you feel you are ready. Start off with the more casual types like Random Arenas and Alliance Battles. These are great places to test builds and get a feel for what playing against real guild wars players is like. You will find nice people and jerks in both pve and pvp, just try to enjoy the former and ignore the latter

You have to choose a secondary profession to continue on to Post-searing. Although, whether you choose to put skill points into the secondary profession is your choice, and you could just put all points into being an Elementalist. Keep in mind however, that the Guild Wars profession system was designed so that players could choose a secondary profession to compliment the primary's skills or the player's playing style.
But, if you REALLY want to only be an Elementalist, you could stay in Pre-searing. But if you do that, be ready for a long grind to 20.
